Stay at Lachen

Lachen is located on the right bank of the Lachen Chu, the main feeder of the river Teesta. The average altitude of the village is about 2700 M above sea level. The total population is around 4000 and mainly of a tribal ethnicity. Lachen’s climate is harsher than Lachung, so infrastructure is inferior. Despite rampant urbanization, Lachen still retains the traditional mountain village’s purity. The old wooden houses on strong stone bases, log sheds piled with timber for winter fuel, and lots of colour in the structure of polished Tibetan-style window frames and rlung rta prayer flags make Lachen a bit of a story lost in the history. A 15-minute walk above the town will take you to the Nyudrup Choeling Gompa.

The reason to stay at Lachen is obviously to move more north towards Tsopta Valley (3850 M) and the majestic Gurudongmer Lake (5150 M). Lachen is also the trailhead for expeditionary treks to Green Lake (5050 M) along the Zemu Glacier, towards Khangchendzonga’s northeast face.

At Lachen, we usually arrange accommodations at simple family-run budget stays with basic rooms and baths. These are clean, cozy and comfortable stays, but do not expect luxury. If you specifically opt for high-end luxurious accommodation, OTAS can also arrange that for you.

Lachen is located inside the restricted area of North Sikkim. To travel beyond Singhik, you need a permit for the vehicle and individuals, which is issued at Gangtok. We also arrange the transport and permit on behalf of the travelers in this route. Foreigners can also visit this route except the Gurudongmer Lake, in a group of two or more.

NORTH
SIKKIM
HIGHWAY
The typical stay at Lachen is usually for one or two days. It almost takes a whole day to reach Lachen from Gangtok by travelling 109 Km through the scenic North Sikkim Highway, one of the world’s most dangerous road. From Chungthang the road gets bifurcated. The other part goes to Lachung, the stay point for visiting the Yumthang Valley. We also arrange packages of North Sikkim (2, 3, 4 Days) which covers all these places. Just fill-up the right-side form, our travel expert will offer you a customised plan.
